I recently caught up with Will Bryant, to talk art, process, music, and nintendo games. Check it out.

Who are you and where do you hail from?
I’m a dude from east Texas that grew up playing sports, skipping meals, acting goofy, and going to church. After graduating from high school I applied to one school, my parents alma mater, Mississippi State. This is where I met Kate Bingaman-Burt and started making stuff. Now I’m a freelance illustrator/designer based in Austin, TX. I’m also a member of the collaborative studio Public School.

Describe your work and maybe a little of the creative process behind it.
My work is full of personality and typically light hearted. I try to inject some giggles into everything I make. It’s been a blessing to work with top notch clients and share my personality with them. The process behind it typically involves random thoughts, music, giggling, crappy printer paper, Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens, and a really old scanner.

Top five albums/ bands you’ve been listening to recently.
1. Deerhunter – “Halcyon Digest”
2. White Denim – “Last Day of Summer”
3. Waylon Jennings – “Dreaming My Dreams”
4. Warpaint – “Exquisite Corpse”
5. The Clean – “Anthology”

Also, really siked for “Down There” by Avey Tare and Panda Bear’s new record/releases.

What are you working on these days?
I’ve been working with Gowalla on a lot of different projects ranging from print promotional items to my first ever animation gig. There are also loads of t-shirt designs, some identity projects, and I recently launched a new portfolio site. Also, I have been real busy prepping for another Halloween dance party in Mississippi followed by a trip to Portland that includes a lecture, mural workshop, visit to the Nike campus, and a solo show at Land Gallery. Whew, it’s gonna be a blast!

Favorite and least favorite nintendo game growing up?
My two favorite games were Contra and Double Dribble! My older brother and I played those a lot together. My least favorite? Hmmm, I wasn’t really ever into Zelda, despite thinking it’s a really interesting theme. Just didn’t play it.

One thing you used to draw as a kid?
Michael Jordan, Jesus, and profiles of guys with goatees.

Where do draw inspiration from (artists, people, places, etc.)?
Traveling, my vinyl collection, my daily routine, my wife and oversize cat, the internet, 1990s basketball players, Native American culture, and the Boy Scouts of America. Just like everyone else, I’m inspired by interactions with people, places, and things. The key to being/staying inspired is to be conscience of these encounters so that your senses are heightened.

What is Public School and where did it come from for you?
Public School is a complex entity. It’s a blog, a studio, a brand, a valuable resource, clubhouse, a series of tubes, and sometimes a loose agency. When I moved to Austin in January 2009 I was working out of the spare bedroom when I quickly found out about Domy Books; an amazing curated art book store & gallery. I mentioned I was looking for studio space and someone suggested Public School. After exchanging emails, Cody Haltom invited me to drop in and show some of my work. I continued to drop in on Friday afternoons with my laptop, jokes, and sketchbook. With repeated visits and mutual interests we discussed the idea of a membership. Once they moved into a bigger space they voted to bring me in, and that’s the truth! Public School is not just a shared studio space, a blog, a source of inspiration/resources, but its also a creative hub. We’re moving more into a loose, organic agency that is becoming more involved with the Austin creative community. “If we can’t get it done, then we know somebody that can!”

What’s next for you?
Keep on keeping on! I’m in the process of applying for graduate school and will continue to freelance. The plan for the future is to become a design professor and hopefully share my enthusiasm for making stuff with others.
